Anxiety is a general term for different disorders which can cause us to feel nervous, apprehensive, fearful or worried. They can affect how we feel about ourselves and also have an impact on our daily lives. It’s probably fair to say that most of us have experienced some form of mild anxiety, whether it be nervousness about starting a new job or feeling worried about meeting a new partner’s parents. However, when symptoms start interfering with a person’s sleep pattern and their ability to function from day to day, then learning ways to get over anxiety is paramount for their health and well being.
Constant worrying
Generalised anxiety disorder or GAD is often characterised by excessive worrying about everyday events for no apparent reason. Quite often the person is waiting for a disaster to happen and can’t seem to stop themselves worrying about such matters as money, health, family, work and even school. Their daily life gets taken over by a constant state of worry, fear and dread. Eventually the feelings of anxiety dominate that person’s thoughts and it begins to affect their work, their social lives and even their relationships.

GAD is fairly common and affects around 1 in 20 adults. It normally begins in childhood or adolescence but can continue into adulthood. It’s also more common in women than in men and most prevalent in people in their twenties.

It is always wise to visit your doctor if you suspect that you have GAD or possibly some other form of anxiety disorder. If you have felt worried nearly every day for at least six months, then the chances are that you do indeed have GAD, and if it has been the cause of you taking time off work or school, then that increases the chances of you having the disorder.

Although treatment such as medication and therapy can help cure your anxiety, there are certain things, however, which you can do that will help to control and lessen the symptoms.
Eat healthy! Cut back, or stop altogether, the consumption of products containing caffeine. These include tea, coffee, cola and chocolate.
Take exercise daily, do yoga and eat a healthy, well balanced diet.
Always ask your doctor or the pharmacist before taking any over the counter medicines and remedies. Sometimes these can contain chemicals which serve to increase anxiety symptoms.
Practice techniques such as yoga or meditation which can calm and control stress
